Results Local meet at Ward Pound Ridge - April 17, 2010
Great return to Ward Pound Ridge
HVO and WCOC returned for a joint event on the oldest US orienteering map after a long time without access to the map. Geof Connor was able to negotiote an agreement with the WPR ranger.

WPR has a great variation of intricate, rocky, green and wide open woods. The rain stopped in time to allow running in dry (but cool) weather. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation proved that it can be a wonderful venue for orienteering and we hope, that we can continue to have more events in this great terrain.

Thanks to coursesetter/meet director Geof Connor and to the meet workers: Chris and Jeff Osborn, Craig Weber, Suzie DeWitt and Liz Chiera. Joe Mokszycki vetted the courses and helped, together with Craig Weber with the control pick-up.

Results DVOA Defeats HVO at Quail Hill -- November 22, 2009
Despite a decent turnout of HVOers, DVOA handily defeated us at the 2009 HVO/DVOA Dual Event. It was held this past Sunday at Quail Hill Scout Camp, near Englishtown, NJ. The outcome continues a pattern of home club victories that goes all the way back to 1999. It also means that the coveted HVO-DVOA Plaque will pass back to DVOA.

While the exact Dual scoring is still being finalized, course results -- including links to splits and RouteGadget -- can be found here.

Looking ahead, HVO is scheduled to host the 2010 Dual on Sunday, November 21, at a venue to be determined.

Course setter: Dave Webber
Meet Director: George Hawes
Helpers: Ed Hicks, Craig Weber, Bob Bullions, Betsy Hawes
Weather: cool and sunny
Starts: 31, Participants: 39

A nice mix of familiar and new faces at the Baird meet. Great help from the park ranger in replacing the drinking water when the whole container leaked into George's car! Kudos to two groups of beginners who enthusiastically and successfully ran both white and yellow, to Bob and Craig who helped greatly with control pick-up after completing the challenging red course! A fine day was had by all.

Results HVO Event Report: Blue Mountain Reservation -- November 28, 2009
Blue Mountain Reservation, Peekskill, NY

November 28th, 2008
Weather: Cool, partly sunny, and very windy.
MD/CS: Dave Webber
Helpers: Chris Osborn, Jeff Osborn, Jon Osborn, Pat Gallagher, Ed Hicks, George Hawes
Starts: 71, Participants: 97

97 competitors came to run off the Thanksgiving turkey and pumpkin pie on a clear but windy November day. The wind frequently blasted through the assembly area scattering map boards and unattended clue sheets. However, once you were in the woods the winds calmed and the 50 degree temperature made for nice running. Several competitors commented on the woods being nicer then they remembered. I tried to design the courses to avoid the areas that I knew had lots of downfall, but my overall impression of the woods are they are more open and runnable then 11 years ago when I designed the Deja-Blue A-meet courses. I apologize for the missing punches on some of the advanced courses. The meet kit had a shortage of punches, so I figured that the advanced runners could better handle missing punches then the beginners -- especially if they read the meet notes that stated some punches were missing.

Results HVO Event Report: Tourne Park -- October 31, 2009
Tourne Park, Boonton, Morris County, NJ

Event Director: Guy Olsen
Course Setter: Nadya Popova

Helpers: Greg Balter, Judy Dickinson, Laura & Curtis Mulhaul, Kseniya Popova, Paul Regan, Alan Young, Sergei Zhyk

Weather: Cloudy with occasional drizzle, low 60s.

Not a bad turnout for a damp dreary day! While it did not rain during the event -- save for some drizzle now and then -- the woods were plenty wet from overnight rain.

A small, but dedicated group of helpers proved invaluable. 12 year-old Curtis Mulhaul provided homemade spooks for decorations, and helped with a jack-o-lantern that completed the Halloween theme. On the orienteering side, Nadya Popova once again set excellent courses, with all the controls being hung the morning of the event with help from her daughter Kseniya and friends. Paul Regan pitched in at registration and provided beginner instructions. Alan Young, HVO's resident e-punch guru, spent the entire event manning the computer so we could have e-punching, and the amenities (splits, easy finish / results) that brings.

Some may have noticed signs warning of bow hunting in the park (part of the Morris County Park Commission's deer management program). Since I was told this would not start until Monday, November 2, it was not a concern. Unfortunately, one hunter did not get the memo, as he set up near a common Green / Red control (#s 8 / 13), and, apparently, moved it about 100 meters away! (my apologies to runners affected by this) After the event, I reported this occurence to the Park Commission, at which point I found out that the southern part of the map, near the lakes, is actually another park, Wilcox Park, owned by the borough of Mountain Lakes. I contacted them and it looks like that bow hunter might not have been permitted under their deer management program, either. Next stop: Mountain Lakes police department.

Results HVO Durland Scout Res meet and JROTC Champs 11/15/2009
The annual JROTC Championship plus local meet at Durland Scout Reservation was a great success. We are giving credit for the fabulous weather (as well as great courses) to Craig Weber, who finally had a perfect O day for a meet where he set the courses. 254 people were out on the 2 White, 2 yellow, orange, green or red courses. Along with the JROTC cadets, we had a lot of girl scouts, boy scouts, and a pathfinder group, as well as individuals and families.
The meet helpers were terrific! 6 West Point cadets came with Major Hallberg and gave beginner instruction: thanks to Mary, Ben, Luke, Kevin, Hannah, and Michael! Judy Dickison took over and finished the last couple of groups so the cadets could get out on their courses. Jim Patterson and his Newburgh Troop 007 Boy Scouts took charge of the parking chores, Chris Lee and Jamie Kamlet handled the starts superbly, Rich Sweeney was a pro at the registration table, Nadya Popova, Bob Bullions, and Daniel Schaublin helped George at the finish table, figuring out the results. Thanks to Jeremy Colgan who started out to look for some late kids, who immediately came into sight! Bob, Craig and George made a good start on the control pick-up. Thanks to the JROTC instructors who organized the scoring and awards for the Championship. (Team results will follow in a few days.) Thanks to the Putnam-Westchester Boy Scout Council for letting us use their beautiful property. Betsy and George Hawes, Meet Directors.

HVO Summer BBQ August 22, 2009

Westmoreland Sanctuary

Course Setters: Ellen & Stephen Stibler

Meet Director: Ellen Stibler

Meet Workers/ BBQ helpers : Liz Chiera , Bill and Annette Borowitz, Stephen Stibler

Control Pickup: Dave Webber, Jeremy Colgan, Michael Mc Neill and Brent Schwartz

Number of Participants: 41

The museum at the sanctuary was the perfect place to host the club summer BBQ, with the heavy thunderstorms that came through during the afternoon. Participants could choose between 2 courses: Brawn (epunching course) and Brains (trivia multiple choice). It seems some of the Brains questions created quite a discussion with the competitors afterwards.. Despite a small turnout, it was a very socialable BBQ with many people spending many hours, enjoying the BBQ, catching up with friends and spending time with Glen Schorr, the new US O-Federation (USOF) Executive Director.

Event Director: Guy Olsen
Course Setter: Nadya Popova
Course Designer: Katya Dvinyaninova

Helpers: Dan & Zac Barker, GeeGee Blair, Judy Dickinson, Alan Lopez, Kseniya Popova, Bob Rycharski, Sergei Zhyk

Gorgeous weather contributed to full enjoyment of orienteering at Holmdel Park. Newbies and novices spent quality time in the woods, no matter if they were doing a fast white or a prolonged brown. The more advanced runners were given the opportunity to test their uphill running (or walking) skills and most had a good time.
Thank you to everyone who participated; it was a good turnout.

Results HVO Event Report: TOEC/Moneyhole Mtn -- May 17, 2009
Taconic Outdoor Education Center, Laurel Festival
May 17, 2009
Cool and mostly sunny weather
MD George Hawes
CS George Hawes, Betsy Hawes
Helpers: Jamie and Chris
37 starts, about 90 participants

One stolen control on both the Green and Orange courses presented a bit of a disappointment to the more advanced orienteers but the many competitors on White and Yellow were not involved. Lots of families and scouts turned out for a day of outdoor activites which included orienteering, canoeing, high ropes, and more. Bird banding was very exciting, as was the presentation on and with birds of prey that ended the day.

Results HVO Event Report: Saxon Woods -- May 3, 2009
Here are the green/red results of the Saxon Wood meet. Many punch cards and stubs for the white and yellow course were destroyed by the rain storm. We will try to reconstruct the results as good as we can.
The event had great courses, with e-punching allowing the use the woods in new interesting ways. The rain slowed down many runners, especially the people depending on glasses to read the map. One runner described the race experience as doing a night-o by day...

participants: 8; registrations: 5

On a weekend when many active HVO members were in Maryland for a national orienteering meet, we organized a local event for members not traveling. However the weather was cold & wet, which contributed to a small turnout. Wonderful courses were designed to use the best areas of the park. The few folks that came out had a good time.

Results HVO Event Report: Surebridge North -- March 22, 2009
Not a bad day for the weather, though a bit on the chilly side. Lots of people came out, both experienced and new, for the first event of the spring season. Bob Bullions set all possible courses. He made the map easier to read and with the exception of 2-3 runners, the changes were met with enthusiasm. Those who ran who might have prefered to have all the rocky ground and all the form lines included at least had a good workout and some good navigational challenges. Many people tried 2 courses and one couple completed 3! Many boy scouts worked on merit badge requirements. Special thanks to all who took the time to print their names neatly on the results slip!

There was a terrific turnout for a cold fall day, of both orienteers and event workers. Six schools were represented for the annual HVO-JROTC championship, with the team trophy going to O’Neill H.S. JROTC. (Have they been practicing with the West Point cadets?) In addition we had a large crowd for the other courses. November 1, 2008 was a perfect day for orienteering: sunny, not too warm or cold, dry. Craig Weber's courses were enjoyed by beginners and advanced runners alike. There was a large turnout of Army cadets, JROTC cadets, Service Brigade and boy scout troops as well as individuals. Most impressive were our beginners who went from a successful White course to completion of Orange and even of Red! Congratulations Danny Tsu, Joshua Passe and sister, and Joel Atkins!

Event Director: Bill Shannon

Helpers: Valentina Grigoryeva, Alan Lopez, Guy Olsen, Tom Pelnar, Nadya Popova.

Sunday, Oct. 19 was a beautiful Fall day. Foliage changing, sun shining, soft breeze blowing, and the temperature in the low 60's. A great day for orienteering. Only thing missing was a good turn out; 21 individuals competed on six challenging courses set by Katya Dvinyaninova. The low turnout was probably due to the late posting of the event on the club calendar.

Loantaka Reservation
Chatham, Morris County, NJ
Sunday, June 8, 2008

Weather: Warm and sunny
Starts: 33
Competitors: 51

This year's fun and games event featured the return of Grocery-O; an event first devised by that legendary O-savant Jon Nash. The event is basically a 75 minute Score-O event with a twist. At each control location was either a grocery item or a picture and description of a grocery item. A competitor purchased said item by punching at that control. The goal was to get as close to 26.99 in groceries without going over. With the fairly easy control sites, all levels of competitors enjoyed a fun event on a warm summer-like day.
