Clear, sunny cool day_more wintry than spring-like

7 courses were offered: white, yellow, orange, green, red, blue and a sprint-O. They were shorter than usual to take into account the snow on the ground. (One participant did the course on running snowshoes.) The American Canoe Association let us use their main building which included a kitchen and a fireplace as well as lots of chairs and tables. Many thanks to Scotty for opening the camp and sticking around for the day! It was a great location. And thanks, too, to the orienteer, who arrived in a pick-up with a plow attached and cleared up the access road.

 

Daniel set all the advanced controls in pits. (The world record for the number of pits used as control sites was probably set today.) There were no DNF_s, so people did a really good job navigating. Daniel also set a sprint which counted for those in the national sprint-O challenge.

 

A newcomer, Nadine, started by completing the white course quickly, went on to the yellow and then completed the Orange as well_quite an impressive first day of orienteering. A family group from Highland Falls smoked the white course and didn_t have time to try another, but joined the club, so we_ll be seeing them again. Jeremy sent his first-time orienteering friend out on the Blue Pit course_and Robert found all the controls and finished_Wow! Orienteers from EMPO and NEOC joined us for the day, especially for the the Sprint. The fastest times were by John Fredrickson and Boris Granovskiy who had exactly the same time. Samantha Saeger was the fastest of the female competitors.

 

The AGM was held after the O events with brief financial, membership, and president_s reports. A motion was made and seconded to cast one ballot for the slate of directors. This passed unanimously. The reports and election were followed by discussions on paper/electronic newsletters and schedules. Both of these topics will come back before the board for further discussion. Lyla Maeder volunteered to do mailings. A second discussion involved electronic punching. Alan Young volunteered to learn how to use the software, the biggest hurdle to using the system. The annual drawings for an award of a gift certificate to Campmor were held. Nadia Popova won the gift for course setters/meet directors, and Craig Weber won the gift certificate for other meet helpers. These events were followed by a fine covered dish dinner with plenty of food for all.
