Call for Help at NJ Scout Orienteering EventCampgaw Reservation, in Mahwah, NJ, is on its way back as an HVO orienteering venue! Thanks to HVO's Scout Liason, Bob Rycharski, the 1981 map of Campgaw is being updated, specifically for use at a special October 2 (Saturday, the day before the Highlander) Scout Orienteering beginners event. Thank you also to Alan Young who will be contributing his OCAD map-drafting skills. About 10 scouts/leaders will be available for "go-fer" tasks, but Bob could really use some experienced HVOers on his staff. As an incentive, all volunteers will get a chance to run on the new map! Three courses will be available: White, Yellow, and "Adventure Run" (Green length, with all controls on or near trails). There will be two "shifts": morning (9 am), and afternoon (1 pm). Iced tea and snacks will also be provided. Anyone who would like to help is asked to please contact Bob at rrychars "at" csc "dot" com, or at 973-724-7672 (on weekdays, 9am-5pm) before Sep 24. Click here for online registration You can also register by snail mail by sending an e-mail to the registrar J-J Coté (jjcoteorders at verizon dot net). He will will send you a pdf form (and a waiver) which can be sent together with the check. I am grateful for the group of people who came forward to help produce this logistically complicated race. Local meet at Ward Pound Ridge - April 17, 2010Great return to Ward Pound Ridge HVO and WCOC returned for a joint event on the oldest US orienteering map after a long time without access to the map. Geof Connor was able to negotiote an agreement with the WPR ranger. WPR has a great variation of intricate, rocky, green and wide open woods. The rain stopped in time to allow running in dry (but cool) weather. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation proved that it can be a wonderful venue for orienteering and we hope, that we can continue to have more events in this great terrain. Thanks to coursesetter/meet director Geof Connor and to the meet workers: Chris and Jeff Osborn, Craig Weber, Suzie DeWitt and Liz Chiera. Joe Mokszycki vetted the courses and helped, together with Craig Weber with the control pick-up. Find details and results here. Posted by Daniel Monday, April 19, 2010 (01:26:59)
DVOA Defeats HVO at Quail Hill -- November 22, 2009Despite a decent turnout of HVOers, DVOA handily defeated us at the 2009 HVO/DVOA Dual Event. It was held this past Sunday at Quail Hill Scout Camp, near Englishtown, NJ. The outcome continues a pattern of home club victories that goes all the way back to 1999. It also means that the coveted HVO-DVOA Plaque will pass back to DVOA. While the exact Dual scoring is still being finalized, course results -- including links to splits and RouteGadget -- can be found here. Looking ahead, HVO is scheduled to host the 2010 Dual on Sunday, November 21, at a venue to be determined. Posted by Guy Wednesday, November 25, 2009 (13:32:05)

Local meet at Ward Pound Ridge April 17, 2010Event at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation: HVO/WCOC members only! You must be a member of HVO or WCOC to participate in this event. This requirement was set by park officials as a condition for bringing orienteering back to the Reservation after an absence of several years. Geof Connor (WCOC and HVO member) has graciously arranged for an orienteering meet at Pound Ridge. This is a wonderful park to orienteer in and had been used extensively for orienteering until the past 8 years or so. The park management has agreed to allow us to hold a joint WCOC/HVO meet but restrict it to members only to hold down the number of participants. When entering the park, the normal admission fee will be waived (in lieu of a $1 meet fee surcharge) if you provide proof of membership. If you paid your HVO membership for 2010, you received a membership card in the mail. Membership will also be checked at registration. If you are not a member, this is a good reason to join the club and take advantage of reduced event fees. Posted by Daniel Sunday, March 28, 2010 (16:06:36)

Saturday's Tenafly Event CANCELEDThe approaching winter storm's potential impact, not just on the event site, but on the areas from which many participants would be traveling, has a wide range, and -- still -- a fair amount of uncertainty. In consideration of the information currently available, and the need to provide adequate notice, the Event Director and Course Setter have decided to cancel HVO's Saturday event at Tenafly Nature Center. It is likely that the event will be rescheduled to Saturday, February 27, or Saturday, March 20. As soon as that is finalized, a new announcement will be made. HVO Event Report: Blue Mountain Reservation -- November 28, 2009Blue Mountain Reservation, Peekskill, NY November 28th, 2008 Weather: Cool, partly sunny, and very windy. MD/CS: Dave Webber Helpers: Chris Osborn, Jeff Osborn, Jon Osborn, Pat Gallagher, Ed Hicks, George Hawes Starts: 71, Participants: 97 97 competitors came to run off the Thanksgiving turkey and pumpkin pie on a clear but windy November day. The wind frequently blasted through the assembly area scattering map boards and unattended clue sheets. However, once you were in the woods the winds calmed and the 50 degree temperature made for nice running. Several competitors commented on the woods being nicer then they remembered. I tried to design the courses to avoid the areas that I knew had lots of downfall, but my overall impression of the woods are they are more open and runnable then 11 years ago when I designed the Deja-Blue A-meet courses. I apologize for the missing punches on some of the advanced courses. The meet kit had a shortage of punches, so I figured that the advanced runners could better handle missing punches then the beginners -- especially if they read the meet notes that stated some punches were missing. HVO Event Report: Tourne Park -- October 31, 2009Tourne Park, Boonton, Morris County, NJ Event Director: Guy Olsen Course Setter: Nadya Popova Helpers: Greg Balter, Judy Dickinson, Laura & Curtis Mulhaul, Kseniya Popova, Paul Regan, Alan Young, Sergei Zhyk Weather: Cloudy with occasional drizzle, low 60s. Not a bad turnout for a damp dreary day! While it did not rain during the event -- save for some drizzle now and then -- the woods were plenty wet from overnight rain. A small, but dedicated group of helpers proved invaluable. 12 year-old Curtis Mulhaul provided homemade spooks for decorations, and helped with a jack-o-lantern that completed the Halloween theme. On the orienteering side, Nadya Popova once again set excellent courses, with all the controls being hung the morning of the event with help from her daughter Kseniya and friends. Paul Regan pitched in at registration and provided beginner instructions. Alan Young, HVO's resident e-punch guru, spent the entire event manning the computer so we could have e-punching, and the amenities (splits, easy finish / results) that brings. Some may have noticed signs warning of bow hunting in the park (part of the Morris County Park Commission's deer management program). Since I was told this would not start until Monday, November 2, it was not a concern. Unfortunately, one hunter did not get the memo, as he set up near a common Green / Red control (#s 8 / 13), and, apparently, moved it about 100 meters away! (my apologies to runners affected by this) After the event, I reported this occurence to the Park Commission, at which point I found out that the southern part of the map, near the lakes, is actually another park, Wilcox Park, owned by the borough of Mountain Lakes. I contacted them and it looks like that bow hunter might not have been permitted under their deer management program, either. Next stop: Mountain Lakes police department. -- Guy Olsen For complete results, click here. Posted by Guy Friday, November 27, 2009 (19:10:36)
2009 HVO/DVOA Dual Event: Help HVO Defend the Plaque!!!This Sunday, November 22, Delaware Valley Orienteering Association (DVOA), our neighboring O-club to the south, will be hosting the 2009 HVO/DVOA Dual Event on their 1:5,000 scale, Quail Hill map, near Englishtown, New Jersey -- about 7 miles east of Exit 8 on the New Jersey Turnpike. For those of you who may not be aware, the Dual Event has been held annually since 1983. It is usually a regular local meet in New Jersey with a full range of courses; hosting duties alternate between HVO and DVOA. A scoring system is used to determine the "winning" club based on results of the respective club members. While we fully expect DVOA -- the largest O-club in the USA -- to show up in force, this map is one of the closest to HVO's membership. Therefore, this could be our best chance to overcome the home-terrain advantage. However, to do so we will need a strong turnout on every course, especially by our women and juniors. Even if you are not very fast, just finishing a course can help HVO's chances! For full event info, including course details, fees, times, notes and directions, please go here. For recent (2000-2008) Dual Event history and information on the scoring system, please go here. Posted by Guy Wednesday, November 18, 2009 (09:59:37)

HVO Durland Scout Res meet and JROTC Champs 11/15/2009The annual JROTC Championship plus local meet at Durland Scout Reservation was a great success. We are giving credit for the fabulous weather (as well as great courses) to Craig Weber, who finally had a perfect O day for a meet where he set the courses. 254 people were out on the 2 White, 2 yellow, orange, green or red courses. Along with the JROTC cadets, we had a lot of girl scouts, boy scouts, and a pathfinder group, as well as individuals and families. The meet helpers were terrific! 6 West Point cadets came with Major Hallberg and gave beginner instruction: thanks to Mary, Ben, Luke, Kevin, Hannah, and Michael! Judy Dickison took over and finished the last couple of groups so the cadets could get out on their courses. Jim Patterson and his Newburgh Troop 007 Boy Scouts took charge of the parking chores, Chris Lee and Jamie Kamlet handled the starts superbly, Rich Sweeney was a pro at the registration table, Nadya Popova, Bob Bullions, and Daniel Schaublin helped George at the finish table, figuring out the results. Thanks to Jeremy Colgan who started out to look for some late kids, who immediately came into sight! Bob, Craig and George made a good start on the control pick-up. Thanks to the JROTC instructors who organized the scoring and awards for the Championship. (Team results will follow in a few days.) Thanks to the Putnam-Westchester Boy Scout Council for letting us use their beautiful property. Betsy and George Hawes, Meet Directors. 104 Starts, 254 participants Click here for results.
